Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion may be a sign of certain medical conditions. This condition usually lasts up to one week and then resolves. Nasal drops are commonly used to combat the common cold. These drops vary in type and have specific contraindications, so they should only be used under a doctor’s supervision.

If mucus is not being discharged but the nose is still blocked and the person is unable to breathe through it, this is a very serious symptom. It may indicate sinusitis (such as maxillary sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, etc.). In this case, pus accumulates in the sinuses (cavities) around the nose, causing nasal congestion and impaired nasal breathing. Sinusitis is a serious condition and is treated with antibiotics.

If the nose is congested but there is no mucus discharge, it may also be a sign of an allergy. Allergic triggers may include dust, pollen, food, animals, etc.

Hormonal changes can also lead to nasal congestion. Many women experience nasal blockage during pregnancy for this reason.

Extremely dry indoor air can also cause nasal congestion, especially in winter when heating systems are in use.

Improper use of vasoconstrictive nasal drops may also result in chronic nasal congestion.

Congenital or acquired deviation of the nasal septum can obstruct nasal breathing.

Polyps may form in the nasal cavity. Over time, these polyps can grow and fill the nasal passages, leading to difficulty breathing through the nose.

If nasal congestion persists for a long period, it is recommended to consult an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist.
