Cardiology

Cardiology is a branch of clinical medicine that studies the anatomical, physiological, physical, and psychological characteristics of the cardiovascular system across different age groups. It focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart and vascular diseases.

Electrocardiography (ECG)

Electrocardiography (ECG) is one of the most widely used diagnostic methods in cardiovascular medicine. It allows for the early detection of existing or potential heart conditions. Although simple in application, ECG is highly informative for heart disease assessment.

The procedure is performed using a special device (electrocardiograph). Electrodes are attached to the hands, feet, and chest, and conductivity is enhanced using ECG gel or alcohol-soaked cotton. The procedure is painless; however, mild discomfort or redness may occur at electrode sites.

ECG evaluates heart rhythm and excitability. It helps detect conditions that may lead to heart failure. Based on ECG results, the cardiologist can identify the affected part of the heart (e.g., necrosis, ischemia, hypertrophy, etc.).

ECG is recommended as a preventive measure annually for men over 30 and women over 35.

Echocardiography (ECHO)

Echocardiography is an ultrasound-based diagnostic method used to examine the structure and function of the heart.

Cardiovascular Diseases

Tachycardia

Tachycardia may occur even in healthy individuals under emotional stress. Chest pain can result from narrowing of the coronary arteries, leading to inadequate blood supply to the myocardium.

Shortness of Breath (Dyspnea)

Occurs due to carbon dioxide accumulation and inadequate oxygenation, often a sign of early-stage heart failure. It may be accompanied by dizziness, headaches, fainting, and weakness. Patients may require oxygen therapy and supportive positioning.

Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD)

Includes angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and cardiosclerosis, caused by varying degrees of impaired coronary circulation.

  • Angina Pectoris: Caused by reduced blood flow through coronary arteries, presenting as chest pain radiating to the left arm, back, or neck. Often triggered by physical or emotional stress and may last from minutes to hours. If lasting over 30 minutes, it may indicate myocardial infarction.

  • Myocardial Infarction: A heart attack caused by a blocked or severely narrowed coronary artery. Symptoms include intense, prolonged chest pain, often radiating to the left arm, shoulder, or upper abdomen. Nitroglycerin may be ineffective. Diagnosis is confirmed by ECG. Complications include cardiac arrest, pulmonary edema, low blood pressure, and high mortality risk.

Cardiac Asthma

A form of acute heart failure, more common in males over 50, often associated with hypertension, myocardial infarction, or kidney disease. Characterized by sudden episodes of breathlessness, cyanosis, cold sweats, and elevated heart rate. Without prompt treatment, it may be fatal.

Cardiology

Cardiology is a specialized field of medicine focused on protecting heart health, diagnosing heart and vascular diseases, and providing appropriate treatment. It covers all functions of the heart and circulatory system, aiming not only to treat but also to prevent conditions such as myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.

Cardiologist

A cardiologist is a medical professional specialized in diagnosing, treating, and preventing cardiovascular diseases. They manage conditions such as arrhythmia, hypertension, heart failure, and more. Cardiologists play a key role in improving patients’ quality of life and ensuring cardiovascular health.

It is essential to consult a cardiologist if you experience palpitations, chest pain, high blood pressure, or shortness of breath. Using advanced diagnostic tools, cardiologists assess heart function and recommend effective treatment plans. Regular cardiology visits are crucial for maintaining heart health and preventing serious complications.

You can consult the experienced cardiologists at Sağlam Ailə to benefit from comprehensive diagnostics and care.
