Autism is Not a Disease, It’s a Unique Trait

April 2 is recognized as World Autism Awareness Day. To mark this occasion, Saglam Ailə Medical Center, in collaboration with the Autism Center and the Art Gallery, launched a special project under the slogan:
"Autism is not a disease, it’s a unique trait."

Project Goals

The initiative aimed to:
✔ Help individuals with autism spectrum disorders integrate into society
✔ Promote an inclusive mindset and greater awareness

As part of the project, children from the Autism Center created conceptual paintings titled "My Happy Family", expressing their visions of an ideal world through art.

These artworks will be permanently displayed at the Narimanov branch of Saglam Ailə Medical Center.

What is Autism?

Autism was first identified by psychologist Leo Kanner in 1943, who observed similar characteristics in 11 children, referring to the condition as "early infantile autism."
In 1944, Austrian psychiatrist Hans Asperger described a group of behavioral traits he called "autistic psychopathy," now recognized as Asperger’s Syndrome.
